Electrical Fault Finding Techniques and Practical Diagnostics

This practical two-day course introduces proven fault-finding techniques that help you move beyond guesswork and identify problems using a logical, evidence-led process. You will interpret circuit information, select appropriate diagnostic methods and practise testing your findings on electrical training boards containing simulated faults. Through demonstrations, coached exercises and practical fault scenarios, you will build confidence in isolating faults, identifying root causes and recording recommended corrective actions clearly.

Is this course for you?

Do you:

  • Want a more structured approach to diagnosing electrical faults?
  • Want to improve your ability to interpret circuit diagrams and operating sequences?
  • Want practical experience using recognised fault-finding techniques?
  • Want to select and use appropriate electrical test equipment safely?
  • Want to distinguish between a fault’s symptoms, immediate cause and root cause?
  • Want to improve the quality of fault records and recommended corrective actions?
  • Want greater confidence when troubleshooting electrical systems?

Then this course is for you.

  • Electrical safety refresher
  • Common electrical fault types and symptoms
  • Structured fault-finding processes
  • Interpreting schematics and circuit information
  • Establishing normal system operation
  • Sequence mapping
  • Half-split technique
  • Six-point technique
  • Process of elimination
  • Safe voltage, continuity and current checks, where appropriate
  • Root-cause analysis using the Five Whys
  • Distinguishing symptoms from causes
  • Recording test evidence and corrective actions
  • Progressive practical fault-finding scenarios
  • Final practical diagnostic challenge

Upon completion of this course, the learner will:

  • Apply a safe and structured approach to electrical fault finding.
  • Explain common fault types and recognise their likely symptoms.
  • Interpret circuit diagrams, operating sequences and system information.
  • Use sequence mapping, half-split, six-point and elimination techniques.
  • Select and use appropriate electrical test equipment safely within the limits of the training system.
  • Distinguish between symptoms, immediate causes and root causes.
  • Record test evidence, diagnoses and recommended corrective actions clearly.
  • Demonstrate an effective approach to diagnosing simulated electrical faults.

This course is suitable for:

  • Maintenance technicians
  • Electrical maintenance technicians
  • Multi-skilled maintenance engineers
  • Engineering technicians
  • Service technicians
  • Manufacturing and automation technicians
  • Engineering apprentices
  • Operators with maintenance responsibilities
  • Technical employees who want to improve their electrical troubleshooting skills

Basic awareness of electrical principles and safe workshop practices is recommended. Experience in engineering, maintenance, manufacturing or a related technical role would also be beneficial.

Delegates must be able to follow technical instructions and participate safely in practical activities. This course does not authorise live electrical work or replace an employer’s assessment of electrical competence.
