What is a Higher National Certificate in engineering?

A Higher National Certificate (HNC) in engineering, accredited as a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ), is a nationally recognised qualification designed to help employees develop advanced technical skills and a deeper understanding of engineering principles, processes and technologies.

Often studied alongside employment, it combines theoretical learning with practical experience across a range of core and specialist units – allowing you to apply your knowledge directly in the workplace.

Who is the HNC in engineering designed for?

MTC Training’s HNC programme is designed for existing and aspiring engineers who want to advance their technical knowledge, develop practical skills and progress their careers in engineering and manufacturing. Applicants will need a relevant Level 3 qualification, A Levels including maths and a science, or other relevant qualifications or experience.

Flexible HNC training delivery

At MTC Training, our part-time HNC engineering programme is delivered over two academic years and gives you the opportunity to complete your qualification while continuing your day-to-day role.

You can study at our Coventry centre on a block release basis, with courses starting each September, or at OAS in Oxfordshire on day release, with a November start.

You'll learn through a blend of classroom teaching and online learning. In-centre training is supported by weekly online check-ins with your tutor – providing extra support while you're back in the workplace and helping you stay on track throughout the programme.

Alongside your taught sessions, you'll need to complete around 6 hours of independent study each week to reinforce your learning and prepare for assessments.

Entry requirements for the HNC in engineering

Applicants need a relevant Level 3 qualification in advanced engineering (completed independently or as part of a Level 3 apprenticeship), or A Levels including maths and a science subject. However, applications with equivalent qualifications or relevant technical experience will also be considered. All applicants will also complete a suitability assessment and interview to ensure the programme is the right fit for their experience, career goals, and development needs.

HNC engineering course fees and employer support

The cost of the programme is £6,500 per learner. Fees are typically covered by the employer as part of their workforce development initiatives. SMEs may also be able to access additional support through available funding schemes and employer support services.
