Is this course for you?

• Do you need to maximise build success and minimise waste?
• Do you need to safely handle and process AM powders, mainly metals but also polymers?
• Do you come into contact with AM powders from initial receipt right through to disposal?
If you’ve answered yes to any of the above, then this course is definitely for you.

Day 1

To be able to describe an ‘ideal’ AM powder
To understand unique material requirements of different AM processes
To have an awareness of common alloys and polymers used
To appreciate the full lifecycle for an AM powder from powder production to disposal
To be able to identify the key powder production methods relevant to powder bed additive manufacturing
To have an understanding of powder management processes, tools and software
To understand the different methods used to handle powder (i.e. Pneumatic conveying, sieving, blending)
To appreciate the importance of good powder handling for quality and H&S
To understand implications of powder storage (i.e. powder flow/shear cell, temperature & humidity)
To understand practices for good powder sampling for QA

Day 2

To understand the H&S implications of handling metal powders
To gain an awareness of H&S legislation relating to powders
To understand control measures for mitigation
To understand how powder is recycled and handled during AM processes
To understand the implications of powder recycling in AM
To appreciate how powder is stored and dosed in different machine platforms
To understand different types of powder recirculation systems
To understand how powder is spread in Powder Bed Fusion and challenges with measuring spreadability
To gain an understanding of how to set-up an AM powder handling facility
To have awareness of the equipment required for successful powder handling

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the powder handling (PH) processes Apply best-practice guidelines to ensure powder quality is maintained during transportation, storage, use, recycling and disposal
  • Demonstrate the steps in the AM powder handling process and apply best-practice to the quality from receipt to disposal
  • Demonstrate, in realistic scenarios, the safety considerations at each stage of the AM powder handling process
